String Theory Pondering

Termanology must have been an old ass woman in a past life with the way we weaves words together. How does he do that? It's like he's on a murderous rampage but he don't sweat it. I swear he doesn't take a breath when he be throwing his punches; he just waits to open up our left eyes. "Music Industry" shows this off the best as he goes on for 30 plus seconds without a hitch. And off-topic, I'm digging his anti-music biz rhymes lately even if it isn't his hardest shit. The humbleness is still there. *Kobe Fist*

Las Drogas

Blame it on the drugs my friends. I finally viewed the vid after reluctance (because I really don't care what Weezy* does--and not that you cared Hdot). He just caught a felony, has had numerous run-ins with the Hip Hop Police and has severe attachment to that styro full of drank. Celebrities, er, Rappers throw hissy fits at times (okay a lot of the time: see Royce v Everyone). I suspect the surmounting E, cocaine, weed, time spent with Superhead and Xanex bars with the of mixture of drank, and whatever else Weezy* does, has taken its tole. Rappers have a great complex, that being that they're under the belief that they're the shit.

Situation:
Weezy* catches a felony. His entourage or DJ gives him advice like "Yo, Weezy F, I know I'm not ya daddy but you gotta lay off that shit son. Gonna wreck ya features/career." Weezy* responds with a fuck you and a middle cuticle. Then he proceeds to publicly out him because he stepped to the KING. He reasons he can always replace a DJ.

Friends, cohorts act as a mirror; they should tell you what you're looking like and acting like. Maybe this is another chink in his armor. I read recently that Wayne's been hanging out with Zac Effron (see Disney's High School Musical) in his Miami mansion recording songs. Logic says Weezy* is making soon to be irreversible decisions. Recovering his image might not be possible... it's like 'release C3 and shut up', right?

As Weezy* would say:

"If you can't have that then you can't have life/Like an apple whole with no slice."

Superfreak

Forget Rick James, bitch. Google Kenny George, as my brother told me to do. And then get ready to straight laugh. I feel bad for getting off over dude's impending problems but I can't help it. Watch the videos, I mean looking at those D3 Winthrop players trying to post him up or get around him is hilarious; it's like he's the flunk-o in a little league basketball game.

The Left Coast

I should've said (minus Bay area). Not to say Hyphy is not tight but I still can't get down to it. So I look towards L.A. for '08. This looks like a killer year considering the West's bigger (and maybe only) acts are due as well as some debuts.

game diary of compton/lax (whatever it's called)
As much as I disregard Game's intricacies, I do look forward to hearing decent raps attached to good beats. Add to the fact that he has improved over his albums and it should mean quality. With this being his last album, supposedly (remember Game is a fragile-minded person), I don't think it will help the quality and in fact it may hurt it with too many expectations.

snoop ego trippin
Another vet who has that knack for singles as his albums still gain rotation from me. With Ego Trippin without features, we'll see how (and if) Snoop can stand on his own. Being that he isn't an MC's MC, and more of a party starter, it could turn out ugly yet I think he'll give us enough.

ice cube raw footage
Doesn't he sound crabby or naggy on "G Rap Made Me"? He could show up in our wise Rap grandfather mode or he could spit expletives until they become conjunctions? I'll peep it for the audacity and freedom he's been able to obtain but I won't put it on a pedestal.

dr dre detox
Even if this does come out I won't get my pussy hairs in a knot. Raise your hands if you also think Dre is overrated. Four people, thanks.

murs murs for president
He's been gone for a minute but he should be able to easily entertain us on the independent level.

bishop lamont reformation
At one time I was so geeked about Bishop. I still am but I don't know which Bish will show up: the socio-political, structured Bishop or the West Coast P-Funk "I'm making a girly record" Bishop. Since last summer, the material I've heard from dude has been fairly weak.

crooked i
I could say he will be a beast with 43 phat songs over the last year... but I haven't heard him on a real beat or singing a real, constructed song yet. I've got the faith yet I got to hear before I believe. Crook is definitely TBD.

k-dot
When I first heard of him, his flow/voice was a huge plus. Although I've only heard 3 or 4 songs in which he's alone, he has a lot of work to do: he's not that lyrical and his content is there at points but he doesn't construct his bars correctly. It's like if you supposed to be G-Rap or Pop-Rap then be it; if you're trying to be different, be it.

When Will It End?

Maybe never... seriously. The South's hold probably won't end; they'll (labels) will always find some stupid shit to put on. There are very few newbies that warrant a listen nowadays but the old heads still get my attention.

weezy* carter 3
C3 will come... right? I've come to the conclusion, albeit the other day (while I was riding to Weezy*'s recent releases), that C3 will be exactly what he's been doing for the past 3 years. He'll have his respectful "MC" songs in line with "Gossip"; shitty Cash Money features (Yes, you Baby!); and all of this will be filled with his avid use of metaphors. If "Showtime" is supposed to be his lead single, I'm not that excited anymore. Is he going to seriously offer us "T-Pain" Wayne for money!?!

big boi/dre 3000/outkast
Anything from this entity will be enjoyed and savored. It's been way too long. Dre 3k could be the best out and while I preach artistic freedom, I'm hoping he veers more towards a Rap album than his last R&B-ish/ladies effort. As for Big Boi solo, I listen, just with not as much fervor. Now an Outkast album I'd really love to hear. Can they save us in the 4th quarter?

bun b 2 trill
I've always felt Bun, no question. Yet his skills hit the wall at a certain point, especially his solo work. I know every step he takes before he goes there--even though I still like it. "That's G" though is not so trill. The tandem of JR Rotem beat and SK on the hook don't vibe with me. I can ride to it but it's under the usual "been there, done that" category.

pimp c/ugk posthumous
C'mon, don't act like this ain't going to happen. I'll keep an open ear but like every other posthumous release, the authenticity is gone. It worked for Big L but he was light years ahead. Since we knew Pimp was grinding like mad, the rhymes might suffer too.

question
He' saying he's on a major and working on his debut so...

rich boy
He should be thinking about being back and hopefully he can offer more this time out than 6 good ass songs and a stronger album with his new found industry connects. But then again, maybe he should wait until ''09.

texas comeback (h-town)
It's been too long since I've heard some good Texas music, especially H-Town. Where is everyone? Slim Thug, Magno, Keke and I could go on. Do something please.

jeezy
While I'm not waiting for him, he, with his status, should come correct for a some good songs. But like my friend pointed out to me the other day, "Will coke rap be acceptable in '08?"

ludacris
I don't know his status or desire considering he doesn't need rap and he's Mr. Hollywood. He's one rapper I wished would have never gone big time. He can be so fucking ill at times but most other times he phones it in. He's one of a few rappers who has the skills/capacity to deliver a classic album but never has come close.

dj drama/southern djs
Can Southern DJs comeback? All of them suck. They just toss the same shit on tapes and they don't really look for/foster talent like mixtapes used to.

The Chi Stays on Top

The Midwest (Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland) deserves to be heard. While Chi straight rules the game right now, other Midwest outposts are doing their things under the radar. Ye, Com and Lupe ruled '07, so why shouldn't Chi's second tier of talent give us some good music (no Kanye)?

rhymefest el che
I've been formally waiting for quite some time for this one. Fest only put out a few joints leaked last year but that was more than enough to hold me over. His Man in the Mirror MJ tribute tape was pretty weak though and sort of pointless; if you're going to put out a tape, do a real one--don't give me 6 real songs that are 2:45 minutes long! But whatever. I may not agree with Fest on all of his points but that's what I like about him: he's consciously boisterous.

kidz in the hall the in crowd
I have yet to give their '06 shit a listen but from the little I've have heard from these cats--it's looking like a underground gem. And their first single "Drivin Down the Block
" has a great throwback feel, that not immediately is tight to me but I'm sure it'll grow on me. Peep the details here. A "Drivin" remix with Pusha T and The Cool Kids? Sean P, Wale, Phonte too? Can't wait.

glc
It's been a while since I heard dude on wax. He had a good tape with A-Trak and some good features with Kanye over the years. Is "Honor Me" going to lead to something. I don't know. I would like to hear from him again though.

crs
Lupe said they're going in this year. WATCH OUT! This could get ugly (no Weezy*). I can't fathom Ye and Lupe on the same tracks. And I'd hope Pharrell would just make a few beats, and not rap so much, and let Ye do the beats. The possibilities are endless.

gemini/gemstones
Lupe better keep is fucking word. Gemini is thee Midwest gangsta rap equivalent. With a helping hand (in Lupe and the FNF crew), Gemini could be a beast without walking on the ceiling (no X-men).

cool kids
They'll be out to build on their EP. I might get tired of the simplistic/one tracked 80's beats though.

eminem king mathers
I don't expect this especially considering the recent developments. I mean he probably weighs 95 pounds now. Plus once rappers leave, they rarely comeback at their previous form.

royce
Bar Exam should be nice? I have been scratching my head on his recent shits. Let's hope Royce can begin to use these tapes as building blocks and stop burning bridges for no reason.

guilty simpson/detroit
I need to back track and give his Stray Bullets a listen and even his new shit. And I'm not about to act is if I'm about to rep D-Town but I dig their independent hustle.

mick boogie
The only relevant DJ as of '08. And he should continue offering personal mixtapes to us en mass and for free.

Return to form

While I channel the New York's philosophy multiple times a day, well act as if I do, '08 won't be a comeback, unless there's another 4th quarter comeback; the current era still reigns supreme.

az undeniable
I trust AZ; he's always produced in some form even if I hold expectations low. His "Undeniable" is just okay but I'll hold my judgements until I hear more. Will the poor man's Nas still have fire power? Um, probably enough to hold me over this spring.

nas nigger
Way too much controversy already, and there's no single out!?! As much as I still respect Nas, I swear he just needs attention with some of the things he does. I'd like to think Nas would build on his average efforts on his previous release but Nas isn't reliable to me anymore; I can't trust him.

saigon greatest story never told
I still don't believe his shit will get released even if he put them blog posts up. I was totally ready to give him my time if he had released the album in December--even cop it, like a concrete copy. But now I really don't know. I hope it's good but will anybody care?

joe budden padded room
Like we should believe Buddens on this one. Idea: We should do Buddens like Green lantern and leave him in a padded room for 3 hours and then he'll be ready (Styles P says "Don't leave Buddens in the green room!"). I think what's more important is that he officially release MM3. It'll act as no more than a form of exorcism; I mean he needs to try something right? Before we get gossiping about Padded Room, he has to sign first and we know how that process goes. I don't expect him until '09.

joell ortiz
Jimmy Iovine said it. Joell even said it. And now Bishop said it. Damn, how and why could Joell get dropped from Aftermath? Dre, anything? '08 was supposed to be Joell's year period. He was supposed to do this and that... Anybody got his e-mail because I want to send him a E-Hallmark "Keep Your Head Up" card?

sean price mic tyson
I haven't heard any word on this yet so who knows.

jay z
We all know he's bored. I mean look at him, he's not even wifing B; he retires but then unretires; he leaves Def Jam but where to? As a quasi-psychologist Jay is way non-committal meaning he's fearful; he may be suffering. He's a competitive jerk-off nonetheless and I can't wait until he renounces his desire to think about planning if he wants to possible write rhymes in his head again.

Since the announced albums look weak we look to the mixtapes we can expect.

skyzoo
As much as I'm hoping he gets on a major, I think he's one mixtape away from shining; '09 should be his year.

fab street mixtape
Can I speak for everyone when I say we'd really appreciate this one?

sha stimuli
I became a fan this past year of Stimuli. But one minute he can kill a beat and another minute he can stink it up. I'd like to dude release an independent album or a new (because I swear every mixtape I have of his is from '06 or '05), original production mixtape.

big lou
Here's another dude who needs to back up recent string of releasing song by packaging shit together and releasing a new mixtape.

papoose + meth
In my heart, and for the sake of real MCs, here's to hoping Papoose gets signed. With that said, he better not release another mixtape. As for Meth, it seems like he caught a second wind. Now could he can he come correct with a release?

My favorite part of '07 was realizing the East is much more than New York. The globalization of Rap has it's benefits: see below.

term
I can't wait for Hood Politics 6, if that's next in line. As with Skyzoo, I think Term's another mixtape away from releasing a major. But will Term get signed in today's majors? That's unlikely, and if he stays with ST his crew (production/hangers-on) they'll be fully capable--I don't doubt anything Term touches.

apathy
I caught onto dude late but he is one of my favorite rappers; he can make tying your shoe laces into a tight song. Although he's good, I haven't heard anything recently from him that I've been excited about. I like his practicality: he's highly relevant with in-house production and crew collabos. But that's what might kill his career. In Connecticut, the boons in a Rap world, can he succeed without leaving? I'm hoping he ventures out, or others lend him a hand, in order for him to fully realize his potential.

roots rising down
Game Theory was ill, so why shouldn't this be. I know they'll deliver something for me to chomp on for a good minute.

bossman/baltimore
I'd group Bossman as I did Big Lou: release one new mixtape instead of random songs. I'd like to hear some underground Baltimore cats get some shine.

wale/tabi bonney
The DC, bama, DMV movement and the overly swagalicious thing is unique. Can Wale build on 100 Miles & Runnin and his connection with Mark Ronson? And can Tabi drop another hidden independent gem?

clipse/re-up gang
The bros have been quite long enough (one year). Volume 3 is supposed to be coming. Crossing fingers that coke isn't a large topic of conversations...

2008

The thing I'm most looking forward to in this new year is variety and a continuation of solid, progressive releases out of "underground" artists. To me, most of the dudes I rock to are still a mixtape or two away from an actual album--if it's a major they're looking for.

I'll remember 2007 for changing my favorites. Most of the music from the last year was completely new to me. But one scary thing is apparent to me: of all the newbies I gained, very few were unheard of, i.e. I was slow to catch on to them. So... I didn't hear any new cats that have started their careers in 2007. It takes a few years for rappers to improve, gain some love and become their own. However we may not feel the affects until 2009 or later but still it's not a good feeling.

With that said, 2007 seemed to see rappers finally get back into their grooves. Like rappers who had taken a year off or been delayed for some reason or another, got back on track; see Joe Budden or Royce.

Trends will continue. Alas, the push backs will surmount. Nas and 36 Mafia should have already dropped. What gives? Saigon's just released his album cover and track listings... should we believe he'll drop by summer? Just because Joe Budden released a mixtape, it doesn't mean he'll follow with an album with in the next 10 months. I mean he might but we've been through this before. Joell Ortiz and Papoose signed deals but both careers are in serious limbo. Six random Southern artists will claim airwaves all year long; watch for Rocko and Trapstarz to do so in the next few months (although I haven't seen them garner that much play yet--which is a good thing). And the R&B world will give us new faces and some old ones too. Yet the form of R&B will continue to mesh with Pop and lose it's true essence.

Not to side with Joey again but as of 2008, Rap has a lot of old motherfuckas still rapping. It seems the age for retirement keeps on getting pushed back. Older rappers still find ways to entertain yet they think the game needs them. I don't conquer with that and believe that if Snoop left, there would be an urgency to find a West Coast replacement--some new blood. With the industry and the fans relying on these elders to produce, it takes the spotlight away from cats who deserve recognition/push. It's not a bad thing but I wouldn't mind if they left gracefully.

As for Major Label artists, who's still left? Nas, Fat Joe, Snoop, Weezy*, Game? And what do they really have to offer? From what I've learned from 07, I'd rather find cats on my own, i.e. mainstream rappers didn't offer much. Mixtapes are still the most appreciated form of a release to me and I don't expect that to change.

I've always thought that there's only 6 albums worth buying every year and sure enough, I've stuck to that presumption every year and haven't missed out. Right now I can only bank on two releases: Rhymefest's El Che and whatever Outkast or their solo shits provide (and that's not even assured).

I fall back on what I learned in 2007 and realize that 2008 will provide more good music but not anything great. Remember too, Rap music didn't get going until July last year and the 4th quarter was surprisingly great. So many releases crowded the last few months that I still haven't given Wu-Tang's 8 Diagrams or Beans' Solution a fair listen (not that it mattered though for Beans). 2008 will see average releases until summer and it may get interesting come fall if say, Jay announces a new release.
