The Kills Midnight Boom

Convential wisdom reminds me this: if I've listened to a cd at least once through everyday for the last 10 days, I really like it. The Kills provide concise Punk/Rock Logic. It goes done very easy and I've found myself singing along quite a bit too. "Tape Song", above is my shit... Can't complain about that now, can I?

Trill Is As Trill Does

It's that time again. I consider Bun B a phase rapper to me; I can only tolerate him every so often. However, once I get back into him, I fall hard for him. He's tight to me, don't get it twisted. I've always admired his swiftness in navigating through the same verse by way of different streets and highways. BUT if we're going to be honest: Bun B's expiration date is quick. He gets stale fast. The content is assured to be a fine balance of street knowldege and Texas swagger. It's a scary thought that this legend has only two avenues, i.e he's never flipped his own script. Plus his fixation with anything and everything 2 Trill has gotten ridiculous. I assumed that he'd name his album after this Trillonmics or Trilltastic etc. and lo and behold a recent interview revealed Bun saying it himself that he's thinking the next one might be Trill OG. This thing happened to me last time out when Bun prepped Trill in '05. He was on damn near everthing. Soon it took a toll and I began to despise his voice. Within 3 different verses/songs you're sure to hear some overlapped rhymes--maybe verbatim. Heard that "Dey Know" flow? His veres on "Certified", "Back in the Go-Go", "Where Da G's" and "Think We Got a Problem"? "That's G", his new single is cool but it sounds like Bun B Version 1.117. Oddly enough though, he usually has the best verse. If he mentions "PA" or "Bun B-da" one more time on a rhyme...!!! For a few months I'll rep him but after his album drops I don't want to hear from him for a year. I already feel that urge to vomit.

The Cool Kids: Pros

I didn't give them much attention early on because after the beats, there wasn't much to talk about. After a while I simmered down and realized that the Cool Kids are energy. They're all about being hip and creating a scene. Every time I press play on "Black Mags" or "Pump Up the Volume" a spontaneous party arises and I'm the only one invited. Party and hype is all over their rhymes, beats and "style". And from watching their performances on YouTube you're relieved that they might be alright with rapping for the sake of rapping--i.e. The Show is their product (as opposed to jealousy and empty drama). Being labeled party centric, the Cool Kids get some slack cut; I'm not as serious as a critic. Although knowing myself all too well, I still question there seriousness. Is it there? If it isn't that's okay, I'll permanently chalk them under Fads. If meaning is present, will it show? A few months ago "Action Figures" is the track that made me give them another listen. On it they were able to keep the sounds cool but elevate the seriousness while allowing their silly similes/metaphors slip through. The outcome was beautiful. Ideally they could offer their party tips while growing as artists and solidify their presence. If the ideals don't show through, who could argue good/throwback party music?

The spare, loud and at times, obnoxious, beats seem to make the Cool Kids. They provide this warming nostalgic pleasure (a nostalgia I've never actually lived through I add). On their EP, Totally Flossed Out, if the beats weren't there, I'd be truant too. Chuck's beats sound perfectly yanked out of '88 without any hitches. The bass element, especially in the car, is never a bad thing. The only pitfall would be that the beats are too one dimensional--would the Kids be able to move outside phunky, phat and phresh 80s? I'm assuming no one will notice for a while which could give him more time to create range. Hooks go hand-in-hand with the beats. Simple and concise is usually better, especially considering the party genre. 80s it might be, Southern it could be. Every song's beat/hook is cut and dry; it's very scripted (almost Xeroxed from 80's performers). After you've got your rocks off over the beats and hook, what's left?

Mikey is worthy of expectations. He's young, 19 and got his own beat maker, what's to fret about? He's short on caring hence the tight jeans and wolf t-shirt on a national ad for Rhapsody. So his lyrics are full of light jokes and similes and it's not a problem. On numerous occasions he moves through the material swiftly with a succint, almost nasally, flow. There are plenty of flashes of the seriousness I seek too. Even his weightless rhymes sound like they come to him and get out of him with ease. And not all of his minimalistic approaches are denounced. I just think he could handle more. Like I said, Chuck ain't terrible but someone should screen his rhymes.

They haven't released an album yet; they're independent. How important is it today to still maintain your freedom (see: Nas and Def Jam). EPs, an unlikely commercial success, is the Cool Kids' only medium... besides the internet. Remember kids, albums don't sell and you never made money off them either. Ringtones is where it's at. iTunes. They're patient with financial success and in turn, they're growing a solid fan base. Call it grass roots rap but the Cool Kids will be successful because of the adherence to The Show. Lest we forget it's music and the most important thing is performing. Hype, respect, and not having complexes and big dreams (i.e. yachts and private jets by 2009) can carry them far. From what I've gleamed off interviews too, they're more interested in establishing a base (no Bush), and building upon that. Their livelihood relies in their energy--what they give us, they'll receive that back and much more. According to their MySpace page says they're releasing another EP, Bake Sale, on May 20th. But not before they drop their mixtape, That's Stupid, coming any day now. It won't be until the Fall '08 that their debut, When Fish Rides Bicycle, drops.

It may seem like I'm taking a hard line against the Cool Kids... and I am. I slam the POTENTIAL sticker on them (and I'm making sure it sticks!). Mikey is and can be ill; Chuck and his beats are still to die for; and their style is low-fi fly (I know, a paradox). Could we listen to 14 straight party jams? Probably not. I'm assuming, or hoping, that by the time they hit their stride they'll have added finer decals to their repertoire.

Watching Them Thangs!

Kidz In The Hall Driving Down the Block
It's just that the teaser video and the song itself had me thinking this video was going to be grand--classic shit. The Kidz' route wasn't bad at all as the cheesiness is in all good fun.

Lupe Fiasco Paris Tokyo
It's about damn time my favorite track on The Cool got its moving picture... Lupe looked so alone on his globe trekking adventures. The bygone era appeal was okay although it doesn't fit literally with the song. No glitz & glam either--just straight rapping in front of the camera. Much appreciated.

Weezy* Interview
Weezy* grew up with Gillie... ya know! "I don't know what's happening where I'm at." Someone needs to be admitted.

Tyga Travis McCoy Coconut Juice
The creation of Soulja Boy is better than this motherfucking hyrbid. Quit the Caribbean accent and the Travis Barker look alike competitions. So what if you don't drink Tyga, don't make a song about Coconut Juice. If there's one thing I'll be sure to remember for the next 6 months, it's: "Put the lime in the coconut and mix it all up..."

The Cool Kids: Cons

If you're cool, do you need to name yourselves The Cool Kids? Even if you're cool, coolness is a fad; it wears off. In three years will your coolness still be able to carry you; will y'all still be cool? Won't we get tired of these kids rocking funky, phat and fresh gear all the time? There's only so many retro trends that can re-spawn. I don't mind their styles, I give a pass to Mikey for them tight, tight jeans--call me a tight jean sympathizer--I just get the feeling that the style seems copied and overdone. I mean we've all wanted to dress like our 80's fantasy, Boy George, but when is the right time to put those visions to sleep. Maybe there's a jealousy thing here but no, not really. Remember them kids in your high school who tried too hard to have the newest craze, freshest gear? Mikey and Chuck remind me of them. If you take a look at their MySpace pics or even thier photo shoot pics, you'll see neon colors, throwback NBA hats and emo rock glam everywhere. Where's Mikey's blush? Did Chuck forget his bustiere?

When I got the chance to peep the Tanya Morgan mixtape one line struck me on "You Should Know ": "I know you think you fly on point like Rev and bringing back '88 when you was born in '87." DAMN is right. I'm not one to give artists the Dikembe finger wag on shit like this but I had to think about it for a second. Yeah, how is that even possible. I was born in '86 and I could barely bring back '95. We can listen to 80's shit and channel our inner Rakim or DMC but it's quite a deceit to think you could bring the past when you haven't even lived it. If you contend, 'They just said bringin' '88 back in one song?' what about them isn't a throwback appeal?

And damn if Cool isn't a played out concept within this last year!

Someone needs to tell Chuck to keep the rapping to a minimum. Like, 'homie, just stand in the shadows, chime in on the chorus and focus on the beats.'

While Mikey does rock, he's still got a little ways to go on rhyming tip. Sometimes I tune out because the shit he says is like 'Whatev's'. Can he show depth and range or will it be straight party music?

This cool thang is a schtick; it's helped them just as much as their music up to this point. For fame purposes, that's not a problem. If their goal is MTV, then by all means trick out on dyno mags or whatever those bikes are called. BUT they are rappers... and image, in my book, is leapfrogged by your rhymes. Can the music outshine their ideal? Will their rhymes start to hit on more of a consistent basis? They have the beats and Mikey's good but will they forever make blas'e party jams? I take them seriously and dig them to a certain degree however I will begin to knock em down if there current style persists. Maybe my ideal for them is just that, an ideal. Maybe they're not going to leave this 80's/hipster shit behind and they'll drown in 808s and gold chains. All I'm saying is that by 2010 if people are trying to bring the 80s/early 90s back... please, kill yourself.

Overwhelmed

There's been so much shit to sift through, and never enough time, I feel so fucking behind. In the process of giving some music spins, I always end up compromising and dropping half the joints. Back in January we had the yearly Flu Season with the release of old heads... I only listened to one song off the Big Noyd; Torae had like two tracks I can recall; eMC was more than solid but I can't find the time to listen to it again; and I didn't care to hear Kool G Rap. Fab's tape was a return to regualrity and held me over for a few weeks. I can't remember that Clipse tape at all. I picked up that Pac Division, Mickey Factz, Dizzee Rascal and Adam Tensta and they've totaled zero listens. I've rocked to the Kidz In the Hall tape quite a few times. After a few tracks, I turned Crook's Valentine's Day shit off quickly! Fat Joe was a waste of time... he had like 12 good bars!?! I couldn't finish Ricky Ross' shit, that flow is annoying. Snoop had a few tracks that were worthy but that CD had a week run in the ride but who knows where that CDR is at now. I still intend to give Blu & Exile and Gnarls Barkley a spin; they're sitting on my shelf collecting dust. Ditto for Guilty Simpson and Tanya Morgan. Term and the squad held me over, thanks. Is it a shame that I've already moved on from AZ's Undeniable? MC's regressing, huh? And now I copped Little Vic's Each Dawn I Die, when am I going to find the time?

And those are the tapes/albums. As always singles/misc. songs find their way in the ride weekly to keep me content but feel the need to still respect the album format. I'll hate the day when the iPod/streams rule the world (aren't we there yet?).

Add my other musical tastes (Moby's Last Night
, MGMT, Cat Power et al.) and there isn't much time to impress.

Post's have been spare since the Lupe month. Hopefully by May I'll be more into it. I'd say Coming Soon but it may take another few weeks to offer my two cents on these cats: Kidz in the Hall, Cool Kids, Joe Budden, Mally, Houston and yes, Head ICE.

Act III

The Carter 3 will be Shakespearean; everything will die. The last vestige of sanity, respect and dignity will officially be thrown out the window. The ideal Lil' Wayne we've always dreamed of will implode and turn into room temperature red Jello. The image of him upon a throne, acting as if he were king, will be shattered.

"At last!"

Maybe it's not as dramatic of an event for you. I've been over him for more than a year myself. May 13th, legally, will be the day Lil' Wayne becomes NOT The Best Rapper Alive. It's been quite apparent to those of us in the know, of what rap music is, that Lil' Wayne never fit his free-pass as "Best Rapper Alive" last year. Years ago when he'd set his mixtape lifestyle into motion, I dreamed of the day C3 would come and it would solidify him in history as one to respect. Not so these days. Blame it on the drink, his college educated similies or his Tupac-in-the-studio regimen, one thing's for certain: Wayne will never be the same. The novelty has worn off. C3 will be filled with singles, girl-centric singles (i.e. club joints), ryder music and smoke music. Inbetween he'll add the T-Pain Wayne, the Reggae Wayne, the deploarable illiterate Wayne and he'll sprinkle his "MC" qualities for good measure. I've come to the acceptance stage. I understand who Wayne is and will be so I'm not expecting him to dumb out on C3. I know he's polarizing too; some will call him king others a jester. That's okay because I've reached my conclusion. I'm sure I'll like it but it won't be a classic or even that good. The only thing I can expect is that his beat selection will be bomb. I'm not against the dude, hell, I still listen, and like, most of his material. I'd just like to see the Lil' Wayne rollercoster ride to begin to hit down turn and simmer for a while.

Remember, this is what he is.

With that said, "Lollipop" and "A Millie" have been getting repeats in the ride all day, every day. They aren't what one would classify as fiya but for the moment, and this summer, they will get me by. I can get down to "Lollipop" on it's sheer goofiness. I've welcomed that addictive hook with open arms "L-l-l-l-l-lick me like a lollipop" as well as his random bridges. However it's not a beast. It lacks originality hence the T-Pain jack and then how are "bottles in the club" a spectale nowadays; I've got bottles on my bike, shit! Make sure you cop the Chopped and Screwed version below as it's gives you Wayne's real experience. As for "A Millie" the simplistic beat is a gift and a curse. It allowed him a chance to kill the beat with his version of Southern lyricism. But besides the loop and the bass, it can get old fast. I thought he came on the first verse "Tell the coppers hahahaha you cant catch em" and it is "tougher than Nigerian hair" but reverts to a being a Alzheimer's patient on the third verse as it lacks structure. It's too slow and random, as if he was spitting a line and making a b-line towards another punch line. Too bad Cory Gunz will be left out of the final version; his flow made the song even stronger. The song could have hit an unforeseeable home run. Is it me or do y'all just been blurting "A Millie" at times during a day?

Kumbaya my Lord, Kumba-motherfuckin-ya! I'd go to camp just for this, sit around a bon fire and hold hands. "Suuuuuu". And when I thought he couldn't carry this song anymore...

Lupe Fiasco Paris Tokyo @ Spring Break

Plies Who Hotter Than Me
Well, I can answer that question... Usually I don't like Plies. BUT these joints, when he exercises his ego and crushes all them "Hatas", me included, I can't help but toss this in the ride and let it play. Plies reminds me of Juvy with all this talk of temps rising. Half the time his speech is incoherent and it's not his drawl. Plies is literally giving us that dragon fiya. Juvy had no shirt in "Ha" too.. Digging that "GOON" chain!

Kanye West Homecoming
If this is homecoming, is Ye the Homecoming Queen with those Luis Rags? This video doesn't feel like a homecoming either, where's the procession. It feels more like Ye just dropped in to say hi. Why is Chris Martin a cut out? Damn, he wrecks this song! The black & white is an overused art form nowadays. Them mirrors was stupid! Where's Wendy at even if she wasn't necessarily literal?

Dizzee Rascal Bun B Where Da Gs
A funny song coming from an North Londoner. AND he came to H-Town!

What To Do?

Now I been through this before. And then I realize: shit, I'll be at these roads again. What to do? I've already done had this on repeat since I've heard it a while back. I stumbled on Mally's seven and a half minute dumb out session the other day. The questions came streaming.

Am I doing what I really want to do? What the fuck am I really doing, I mean, do I understand what I'm getting myself into? For the past few years I've been wading in the fallout of excitement of college. Luckily I found my major after a year but it's taken 2 plus years to get into this damn nursing program--yeah, I'll be a male RN soon, so snicker with the jokes, I've heard 'em all! Well, since I've started the program this semester, I've questioned my passion for the job. Even though I'm only a quarter through it, it's work; my feet hurt; and there's some gross ass shit. I'm not at all thinking about quiting. There's plenty to keep me interested and hell, I still enjoy it. It's just that I have this feeling like I'm going to be trapped by it. Like once I get through and start working, I'll be there forever. And that's scaring me. There's some shit I really want to do but took a step back because, well, I need money too! I don't want to be another starving artist, depending on others for crumbs and having my visions never being realized. I didn't want to forced to work for FOX news or writing for a failing paper that has to be filled with Paxil/Viagra adds to be kept afloat, after copping a journalism degree. And I won't even get into questioning my family/ sex life for y'all like Mally was willing to do. I'm doing something constructive yet at the same time I feel lost with my life too.

The track just gets me thinking, questioning myself. It's beautiful. It provides a platform of expression, allowing pent up shit to be thrown out there. I swear I get lost in its length and it ends and I quickly hit repeat. Because Mally was willing to put his business out there to strangers ("I don't know you!"), it makes me willing to get my angst/problems out. Call it a stress reliever.

Complaining About Nothing

In anticipation for Wale's upcoming mixtape, Mixtape About Nothing, "Conclusion" strikes a chord: rappers are concerned. Wale is straight foward with his feelings of his art dying. We know rappers carry on this facade of money, cash, hoes and lyricism is not a fan's number one ideal. The Soulja Boy and Hurricane Chris realities are felt through out the blog world. "Money doesn't last... money's the last thing on the list," okay. Then the solution is just buying an album? Earth to Wale: on Interscope you'll be lucky to recieve 0.50 cents per album. Bloggers have hurt the music industry, no doubt (we "do raise the bar to an unattainable"). Although it was a necessary medium considering the raping that goes on by the music industry. Wale blaming fans is ridiculous. Is he scared that people won't support him? Why should someone pay $15 for a Fat Joe album when there's two worthy songs? People have smartened up. If people are moved enough, they will support (see: Little Brother). Hasn't he just been streamlined with Interscope and Mark Ronson? Acting pretentious already, damn!?! I understand his concerns yet blaming the fans is the wrong move. Remember where/how you came up--and that's not to create a feeling of dependency on the internet/free downloaders. Do your business and the fame/respect will come (or not). If you wanted respect, you wouldn't have gone into the music biz Wale.

I'm at odds with Wale on another tip too. He's unique and although that's cliche, it's the main reason why I'll continue to listen to him. He'll say some dope shit and then he'll continue with his particular style/flow (it's hard to describe it) and not make sense to me; it's as if he's just rapping, albeit on a better level than most. Not everything makes sense and his transitions can be confusing. Maybe that's just me, IDK. Maybe it's the jealousy that he got on before other underground heads who deserve the spot much more than him. I mean I'm for the underdogs and would like to see more areas, the DMV, get seen. The beat on "Go-Go Mode" is too circus-y. Neither one of the three verses smash each other; each has good and boring parts. I dug their flows just not the content. I fucks with "Nike Boots", no complaints! Along with his other recent other tracks, he still offers me enough to continue to keep an ear out and keep me interested. And I can't wait for Letterman and Leno to pronounce his name "Whale" instead of "Wa-lay". I'm not saying it's a closed door on me feeling him but from what I've heard, I know I'll never be a Wale backer.
