Spread: Kiotti

Kiotti aka Hardbody Yiotti has been my favorite unknown from the south for almost two years. While Mike Jones, Slim Thug, Paul Wall rode the "Still Tippin" wave and Chamillionaire rode his "Ridin Dirty" hit, Houston has been very quiet. Excluding Chamillionaire, the others have had a hard time keeping their flame. As for Chamillionaire music... I have nothing nice to say. Of course UGK has resurfaced and Lil Flip still tries to make noise although I don't think anyone's listening. Trae has at the least been on his grind too.

I mention these fellow H-Towners because they've received momentary success or regional success. The Houston rap scene is deep; I could go easily name 50 cats on the drop of a dime--Keke, Z-Ro, Chalie Boy--see! I've come to the realization that Houston music is regional for sure, landlocked only to Texas. While Atlanta and Miami are seeing continued exposure, Houston is still quite under appreciated.

This time last year Kiotti was killing it. For a Southern rapper his flow and delivery are on point and he can ride beats. His voice goes well over tracks and takes command. He's gone over some freestyle beats and made them his own. The beats he chooses are different too, they're not all the same shit everybody else goes over. He doesn't roll with a crew of other rappers, or get on with fellow H-Towners a lot either, on songs at least, so he showcases his talents alone. And from listening to his actual freestyles from a few years ago, he's decent; rhyming is his strong point.

But then there are many reasons why I've felt he's become stale. For the last two years he's had one or two songs on every DJ 31 Degreez tape; there's never been a Kiotti exclusive tape of new material. There has been no progress because he's at the same point he was two years ago. Kiotti has had very few original produced songs and after a certain point, you should graduate from others' beats to your own. His lyrical content has also dried up. Haters, women (nasty shit too, which is fine here and there but not all the time), hustling women, car decals, his pinky being frigid and how much his neck is worth are usual topics.

He better have some deal on the low he's working on because if this persists for any longer, he'll be just another mixtape rapper to me. When I say that, I do question if he can even make an actual song. He's mention he wants to a Top 40 rapper but he doesn't fit that mold. I was surprised that "Phone Song" wasn't lambasted all over radio, television, etc. It's perplexing that he's waiting for a major because I don't think he'll ever get one that is favorable to him, so it's odd he doesn't go independent and make some real moves.

Get the shit below full of 20 Kiotti tracks from the past two years. These'll show him of well, so give them a listen and share what you think.
