Tupac Lives For Some Odd Reason (and not in Cuba!)

Ten years ago Mr. Tupac Shakur passed away much to our chagrin. The assailants have yet to be found, but let’s say Shakur’s past and reputation made him a target (psst the Bluff Daddy may have snuffed him out along with BIG). His “THUG LIFE” persona had a hand in his death but it was him. He didn’t care for you or your crew. He was the first “I got shot 5 different times” rapper and that attitude didn’t help him. It seems too, that after his death, along with Biggie’s, gangsta rap died. Fake g rap has taken over, where you can say one thing and be another. I’m sure he’d have gone no other way, though. He lived by the gun and died by it. “Tupac was the epitome of a black man” as his sister claimed. Maybe true and his actions cannot be judged per se, but if he lived his life like a “prototypical” black man – doing whatever and not giving a shit – then was he satisfied to be a martyr for a better cause? Is today’s black America any better? Have youth learned through his teachings? Was he supposed to be a role model for the disenfranchised? While I’m glad he wasn’t a role model and spent his time doing his own thing, he was not a positive inspiration to others as much as he could have been. Well, I guess only God can judge him? Yeah… right.
Tupac was his own. He never jocked and was more than original. As for his legacy, it’s adorned with ‘what ifs?’. Being 25 when he died, he was just entering his prime for a rapper. Remember Jay-Z didn’t get big until 28. Ah, yes the potential. It’s too bad, but the rap game has yet to move as its listeners have yet to give up his “immortal” status. His music career needs no explaining or recap. He catapulted himself into acting roles before it was popular (and not to mention he didn’t need black cinema either). One thing’s for sure: he’s gone. It’s fine and dandy to reminisce about the greatest rapper to ever live and never to reach his best, but just move on. With that said, today’s a new era. There will never be one better than him, but there have been some that have been just as good in today’s game.
The thing I will remember most about him is his ability to transcend everyday life. He was not three dimensional. He had many facets that allowed him to show another side of what a talented man could bring to the table. He was legit: a thug, a poet and human. Remember him for his good, bad and what he was (and not what he could have been). Then leave him alone; his death should not halt your distaste for current rap. After getting him out of your system, tune in or out, as you revel in Tupac’s best, “Keep Ya Head Up”.
