Jordan disses Starbury
At an unvieling of a new Jordan line shoe early this week, former NBA and world megastar, Michael Jordan (MJ) had some off color comments on what he felt was a low blow to him and his line of shoes at Nike. MJ heads his own brand under Nike, the Jordan line, which brings a new authentic shoe each year that’s named the actual Jordan shoe. He has his Jordan team line as well, which releases standard issue shoes. And under that same Jordan team line, he has a Jordan clothing line that includes his face and symbol on jeans, shirts, hats and you name it. The Nike brand owes it to MJ for being that much more successful. Oh and Nike also owes it to Indonesian kids who are willing to work for 3 cents an hour.
MJ must have felt threatened while making comments at the press release show. Stephon Marbury, who owns an enigma of a personality, used to be with And1 but now has released his own brand of basketball/tennis shoes for just $15. This infuriates MJ and Nike because they charge for the most part 10 times that. Starbury, as Stephon is known, adressed the issue by saying that he wanted his brand to come with a star yet be cost efficient so that young kids could feel worthy with Starburys and it would only set families back a mere $15. Great idea, right? I guess MJ took it differently.
“Hell, no I am not happy with that shoe. Starbury? C’mon Steph, you serious. Should have taken advice from your big brother you desserted, KG. You don’t disown corporations. They own you, or they should own you. Who does he think he is, Hakeem Ojilawon? Brotha please. Hakeem’s high cheekbones were enough but he tried to be “a good person” with his cheap, Payless, Spalding line. Where is he now. He aint at the Slam Dunk contest. You know, funny story, I used to take my son James, to the park and play ball every weekend. There’d be other boys to play small pick-up games. Some of the kids there, sadly to say, were equipped with Hakeem’s Spaldings. I remember, vividly, snickering. I’d provoke the other kids to laugh and mock his cheap, non-MJ/Nike shoes. Those hideous designs were awful, trust me, I needed to do that. Finally we made that kid cry. He got so mad he played in his socks and burned the Hakeem’s. I told him ‘hey, it’s alright Jimmy or whatever your name is. Tell your mother I can get you a pair of nice shoes at a little discount. I know people.’ So I gave him my employee discount and he got a new pair of Jordans for $120. What a bargain, I know. Back to “Starbury”, he isn’t even a star. I mean who actually is going to buy them because I would just clown ‘em. Look, I run this thing, alright. No, no, no aiiight! I make my people look “fresh”. I would be doing a disservice to my people if I didn’t adorn their feet with such art. My people’s feet need to be looked after. My people don’t pay their rent because they understand the importance of buying their 2 year old mini-MJ a pair of Jordans at $79 a pop even though their kid can’t walk. People don’t understand us. They say I rip my people off, bull! I help my kind. Help them stay clean, help them to repeat that negative cycle. Do you want to be caught dead in a pair of fucking Reeboks? Didn’t think so!”
