Lil Wayne & Juelz Santana: I Can’t Feel My Face

In waiting for this dream collaboration for over a year, the I Can’t Feel My Face prequel mixtape disappoints. I had been waiting though for a trio, in which Young Jeezy was supposed to trail blaze too. In retrospect, Jeezy would have clouded the tape even more so with his suspect rhymes. The tape gained steam via Elz with last year’s cult hit, “Make It Work For Ya”. The idea sounded great, as an up and coming Dipset cat, Elz would off set the ever so present “Best Rapper Alive,” in Lil Wayne. Only one rhymer comes through and the production is so mellow, it’s depressing. I hope some of these songs on this “prequel” do not make the actual mixtape. It almost seems as if Weezy & Elz just quickly hashed together a sampler and released it just because. They don’t work well with each other at all; Weezy has to pull himself and Elz over their duet tracks. To Elz’s defense he does do his own solo tracks.
Immediately scanning the track listings you’ll notice two things, one good and one bad. The good: Weezy, as good as he is, has no solo tracks. You can relieve your fears of hearing the youngin’ bore you of three verses. The bad: track titles. With names such as, “Hot Shit”, “More Hot Shit” and “Hood Shit” you know you’re headed for some unplanned garbage. Hardly any of the beats hit; there are no bangers. The “I Can’t Feel My Face” released on Weezy’s “Dedication 2” a few months ago was a tease. Plus they decided to use 50’s “Whip Ya Head” beat, which alerts me of one thing – this was done months ago. So accordingly with the beats, stale rhymes and unenthused rhymes follow.
Elz does deliver, but it’s the same nuisance we’d heard on “WTGBM” and I’d expected him to improve over the last year. His flow is unorthodox and choppy but it distinguishes him from the rest. If so, it’s still holding him back as he cannot move onto the next level. His flow scheme is so instilled he does not deviate or experiment, rather he continues to repeat the same structure song after song. The basic flow is so basic it’s absurd at this point. He was unable, at least on this “I Can’t” prequel, to move on from nursery rhyming (in “More Hot Shit” he mentions the gingerbread man again). If you’re going to talk about crack (“Hot Shit” ‘You got crack, Viola’) so damn much – I don’t need to hear that “Hickory, Dickory Dock” shit. Move on! The bragging continues and I’m just not believing it, Elz. Taking a step back Elz, I don’t dig it.
Weezy’s able to keep his heat going as he strolls on by on “I Can’t”; he’s poignant while being concise. The “Best Rapper Alive” has the ability to kill anything, with his recent jockeying position, but the Baby doesn’t wow here. He carries himself and shores up Elz’s missing part, but nothing else. The usual cries of N.O. are plentiful, “Boy I’m from N.O., you gon have to shoot me…” and “everybody got problems and money’s the answer, but teacher aint pickin everybody w/ they hands up. What are we to do to get paid…”. Judging from his “Dedication 2” and all his other recent success, his material is plain average. I got bored with Weezy often throughout the listen. Weezy, laid back? An understatement.
Both of them seem to set up shop and sell the like they have before. The duo seems alright with just crooning and leaving and nothing in between. The over confident Elz doesn’t realize he needs to step it up. And it’s as if Weezy’s telling us he’s not giving us anymore for a little while. With the anticipation ripe, this tape seemed to want to deliver more. It only delivered much more of the same, which is not a bad thing. It’s just that I can feel my face for right now, so let’s hope I can’t when they return.
