I hate titles sometimes
This Big Mike/Hell Rell tape I’ve been listening to lately is not bad but nothing on here really excites me (‘cept Aptahty). Rell’s tracks are okay but nothing to the point of a "hold up, wait a minute". And then I’ve been trying to listen to this Chuck T tape, New South Rides w/ Me 3. Now, I like the south but c’mon now! This shit on here sucks. Like this dude J Capone's "Foot Soldier" track is terrible. Now I may be over reacting but how much did you pay Chuck? I’m not hating, really—wait, yes, I am! I want to tell this dude J Capone to put down the mic step away from the booth with his hands up. Wal-Mart wasn’t hiring, huh? I don’t mean to be rude but if you can’t rap, you can’t rap. What do folks not get about that. Now I know everybody wants to get their shine on and folks have different tastes but yo, J Capone you’re not going to make it.
I’m just disgusted right now too, everything’s been lackluster. And all these mixtape artists ain’t going nowhere, y’all need to either release through a major or get some independent shit because I’ve done heard enough of you over these same beats for what, 2 years? And, too there is too much music out there. Damn DJs with all these tapes and they have all the same songs! I swear half of these dudes ain’t even DJs, don’t even know how to spin. The internet don’t help either, me included; I help prolong and propagate some of these cats’ bleak, meak futures. Just because you can post through MySpace doesn’t mean you can rap. And how come I heard this one cat pen a song about a girl with a fat ass and rhyme it with bass when he meant bass but for rhyming purposes he say bass, not knowing that it’s a fish? If I remember correctly, the reason I loved Rap from the get go is: 1. the beats can be crazy ridiculous (sorry I had to) and 2. what was being said was raw, real and expressed in different ways; it was introspective.
See the reason I’ve been feeling this way is because 6 months from now I wont be able to listen to 75% of this shit. I’m exaggerating a little bit but you know what I’m saying. Now I’m not expecting classic shit, just something I can pick up and not wait for the chorus and then hit the forward button to the next track. Forget that Hip-Hop is dead controversy. Yes, the way the Rap game is right now, there certainly is a missing piece to the puzzle and that’s called reailty. Everybody is waiting for that one single so they can get their ring tone money (Jada I see you). I’m just tired of hearing one hot joint from dudes. Fuck a hot joint—it needs to be plural.
What’s missing is accountability. Rappers aren’t accountable for anything; there chasing a dream that they’ve inflated. Some of them make it and others, well, try forever. It’s an ill-fated one that once it peaks, usually crashes, burns and drowns in some Krug Rose (I see you Hova). Rappers aren’t checked and they come off as impersonal, you know, with buying all that bling, it just makes you wonder. Trust me, there’s a time for "Snaping", a time for "J Capone" (well, not him at least) and a time for "Hip Hop" (JOrtiz). Rappers can run amuck and talk shit out of there mouth—say something more Elz, instead of wearing "Iced out skull heads"! What’s my interest in Mims if I buy his album and he takes my money to buy a Range Rover, while the label tosses like 4 Ranges worth into an investment? If you make good music, there should be no reason why people wouldn’t feel you, no less support you.
So in an effort to make my site more unique and to keep myself interested/motivated—if you haven’t guessed already, I am getting frustrated with posting music, it’s not necessarily the work but the end result: crap!—I am creating:
Jams every Sunday. Because whenever I hear the word "jams" I think of old music from years ago (yeah and those man capris too). Jams to me, is what I can run to when I feel lost, bored or in need of some desperate help (Warren keep them lbs off); it’s what I expect from our current providers. DFB’s "Lean" is a memory but it’s one of those that you’re not ashamed of but you try to distance yourself from. "Lean" et al is like puberty, you’re glad it’s over. I’ll do a short post of something I grew up on, something I respect. It’ll be an artist, an album or may be totally random. Master P: Ice Cream Man is up first.
Check My Footwork every other Saturday. That above was a sneak peak. Wait & see. The quality will surly depend on the viewer’s involvement.
Spread every few weeks. Spread will be an artist interview with some tracks. This aint certain because I am contacting artists as we speak and if they don’t get back to me or don’t want to do it, then Spread will go on without their voice. I don’t like being a bootlegger; I’d like to become more legit. Or at the least, create some dialogue, some accountability, some sense of connection. It’s not like we’re gonna do some kumbaya shit, you can go to summer camp for that.
I don’t get paid for this shit and I don’t intend to be. I’m not "just another blogger"; take me seriously! I pay forward my knowledge, energy and love for music. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy free music but I buy tapes and cds even though it has been kept to a minimum because: shit sucks, everything’s free and I don’t have that much money to be supporting everybody. Real talk, if every thing becomes free, then there’s no motivation. Support those who deserve it; it’ll most likely step up their game.
